Originally published in 1985, as part of the Lowther Road ‘Local Studies’ series of books and pamphlets, this history contains a wealth of information about life in the town during the First World War (1914-1918), and also includes details from the years immediately after the War. It may come as quite a surprise to read just how much a relatively small seaside town became involved in that dreadful conflict - especially when it came to the care of the wounded... It can be difficult to find a copy of the original pamphlet these days, and the author, Mike Edgington, has very kindly authorised the publication of this free online PDF version of his work, for anyone to download and enjoy. The book may be used as you wish for educational, research or recreational purposes, but it is NOT to be used, in any form, for commercial gain.
